Seeing Clara Barton

Clara Barton Photoshop

I’ve been on a Photoshop illustration kick lately. So I jumped at the chance to create this portrait after learning of the National Park Service’s juried show: The Art of Clara Barton. Thanks to a photo shoot last year at The National Museum of Civil War Medicine I had some good images to work with. The piece got into the show, and it was also used for the flyer.

Because we were allowed two entries, I decided to do another portrait. Using Illustrator, I built up the image using only the letters of Clara Barton’s  name. The background is a photo I took of the back of an old quilt. This was tedious and confusing (it was difficult keeping track of the dozens of layers) but strangely satisfying. I’m happy to say this also got into the show.

The exhibit runs from September 4 through October 31 at the Clara Barton House at 5801 Oxford Road in Glen Echo, MD. A reception will be held Sunday, Sept. 4. This coincides with Glen Echo Park’s 41st Annual labor Day Art Show which is adjacent to the house.
